Troubleshooting Gasoline Generators

Use these checks for common gasoline generator issues before requesting service. Always stop the engine and let it cool before inspection.

Generator will not start

  • Confirm the engine switch is ON and the fuel valve is open.
  • Check fuel level and use fresh gasoline.
  • Check oil level. Low-oil protection can stop the engine from starting.
  • Set the choke correctly for cold or warm starts.
  • Inspect the spark plug and air filter if the unit has been used before.

No power output

  • Reset the AC breaker or overload protector after removing connected loads.
  • Confirm plugs and extension cords are rated for the load.
  • Start the generator before connecting appliances.
  • If voltage remains abnormal, stop using the generator and contact support.
